Slot makes Liverpool’s reception “in danger” and points to the injury problem

Liverpool boss Arne Slot believes his side are ready to tackle the usual weakness that has hampered their season

Arne Slot admits Liverpool have looked “in danger” at times this season, but believes his side are determined to overcome the recurring problem heading into the most important fortnight of their season.

The Slot team travel to Manchester City for the quarter-finals of the FA Cup on Saturday at lunchtime, after which they will face Paris Saint-Germain in the last eight of the Champions League and important Premier League games at home to Fulham and the first leg at the Hill Dickinson Stadium against neighbors Everton.

Liverpool have been plagued by uncertainty this campaign as shown recently when they followed up an impressive Champions League win over Galatasaray with a shock top flight loss to Brighton less than 63 hours later.

Although Jeremie Frimpong could join Alisson Becker, Conor Bradley, Wataru Endo and Giovanni Leoni on the sidelines after being substituted just 12 minutes into the trip to Holland in midweek, the rest of the Reds’ players appeared unscathed in the latest game of national team duty.

And with Mohamed Salah and Federico Chiesa expected to return and Alexander Isak back in full training, Slot hopes his side can handle another tough season.

“Most of our players have played during the international break, but not all of them have played twice for 90 minutes,” said the Reds boss. “I expect them to be ready for the program we will face.

“We have shown many times this year that we can be a very good team. Unfortunately, we have also shown this season several times that we look vulnerable, and we have to find the best of ourselves as we have had many times this year.

“When we had good results, the results later on were not what we wanted and that had a lot to do with the players not being there at the time, which we saw in the last game when we played Brighton.

“We played a very good game, in my opinion one of our best against Galatasaray. Then three days later we miss Alisson and we lose Mo. Three minutes into the game Hugo (Ekitike) needs to go.

“I think it’s fair to say that a few players in the second half struggled with the fact that we played 62 hours after the Galatasaray game and another game against a strong team.

“I hope and expect that we can be the team we were against Galatasaray.”

Liverpool face Paris Saint-Germain for the second consecutive season in the Champions League having lost on penalties in the round of 16 last season, and they visit the City team who won the League Cup last time out when they beat runaway Premier League leaders Arsenal.

Ms Slot told liverpoolfc.com: “We’re probably playing the toughest opponents you can face in the FA Cup like the Champions League, but you always know if you end up in the quarter-finals that these are the teams you can face.

“It’s exciting for us. I think it’s also difficult for them to play in Liverpool.

“Unfortunately, we play Paris Saint-Germain first on Wednesday, then the second on Tuesday. That means three games in seven days. But it’s part of the last part of the season.”
