THE POWER OF THE SPIRIT steps up to a mile for the first time, and that looks like a good move for this son of Ulysses. His father’s best children have appreciated the journey and thrived when their strength was tested. He has two from four in his career so far, and both wins at 7f. He should appreciate this step up in the tour, and there is no reason why he should not upgrade from two to three. He gains 10lb from top weight and I stand with him in the ITV opener.
BELLARCHI he won a handicap in the game and returned in October from the mark of 83. He had a couple of disappointing runs this season, but he bounced back. the sound of the turf surface now at the mark of 83. His return to Wolverhampton at the end of the tail of March should leave him a spot for this, and he is disabled to re-enter at a great price.

I like autobiographies SERVICE at a great price for Emma Lavelle’s character stable. He has had seven winners in the last two weeks and hopefully this can be one to add to that tally. He was second at Hereford before winning twice at a good place towards the end of 2024. He had a long run before that when he reappeared at Chepstow last October and went on to win again at Exeter in November. He returns to the sound stage again, and when Harry Cobden was registered to ride, he could be exposed with a slight handicap of 114 marks.
14:30 Musselburgh – Al Qareem
It’s hard to see past AL QAREEM he does not fall into this category. He is rated 114 points and has an excellent record in sub-par races. I don’t see that being an issue for him at this stage of his career, he’s now three from eight in a good spot, and he’s far superior to the opposition.

I was taken by JAKART DU MOULIN at Doncaster when he overcame a handicap under Freddie Gingell by a wide margin. He really opened up after the last jump and the further he went, the better he got. This trip should really suit him, and Harry Cobden is in charge again, having won him on their first start. He has a great chance of producing a hat-trick.
15:05 Musselburgh – Gambino (Best Bed)
I’m down GAMBINO for Skelton’s class of structure. He’s getting the tongues for the first time and is currently rated 83 – if the links are looking at big pots down the line, he needs to get somewhere north of 90 to reach the top handicap. He’s looking pretty lame in his Irish form for Noel Meade, and he won’t be too far away from his current mark.
THREE DOUBTS was a good winner at Sandown three runs back, and was behind Jagwar at Cheltenham on his first start in January. That form was clarified at Cheltenham in the Ultima when Jagwar was recently rejected, and I don’t believe Triple Trade is the price he is.
15:42 Musselburgh Jer Batt
CONFIRMED he hasn’t won a race since August 2024, where he won 87 points. He was given a mark in the 90s that took a while to decline, thanks to a series of third places, including this race last year. It was from the 92 mark, and he dropped to the 85 mark this time around. He has had air surgery since then, and if that has any effect, he looks crippled and should get close again.
I’m still swinging VICTORIA MILAN at a great price, mainly due to jockey books. Jonjo O’Neill Jr. she won the Imperial Bede for her father, and is still claiming love for Count Adhemar at the time of writing. He jumps ship on my selection for the Greenall and Guerriero team and there may be a good reason for that, but I can’t find it. His recent form has not been encouraging, but he has had just one chase start, and has fallen short of an appealing 100 mark, having been second at 114 over hurdles. Of course you leave me.
Karbau has never beaten the County Hurdle before, and goes into this difficult situation. The difference between the two races is that the County does not include starters, and there are many takers in this competition. The most appealing one is DAVY KOKONYANE down the 125 mark. He’s got a lovely mark and on the other hand a good weight, and I can see him getting closer to Willie Mullins’ class.
Willie runs two into the bumper, Some Pretender and MIRACLES OF THE DAY. It might be a hint in itself that Patrick Mullins sided with the latter, considering that Another Impostor looks like the obvious choice in all the popular genres. He won a number of championships at Punchestown last year, before disappointing twice since then, but the fact that Patrick went with him is eye-catching!
