Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall have put in their bids for a place in Tottenham Hotspur’s new starting line-up. Roberto De Zerbi will aim to lead the Lilywhites back to winning ways when they take on Sunderland at the Stadium of Light next week.
Spurs are yet to win a game in the Premier League this season and could drop into the bottom three if they lose to the Black Cats and West Ham beat Wolves. The Hammers will have the luxury of setting the pace, facing Rob Edwards’ side on Friday 10 April, before Tottenham play Sunderland on Sunday 12 April.
Fortunately for the Italian, he will at least have a week or so to gather his forces before going to war in the North East. With no time to waste, De Zerbi could be inclined to reflect on the performances of his country’s stars during the international break.
Gray and Bergvall were both impressive on Tuesday night. The former fired England Under-21s to a 4-1 win over Moldova, maintaining their three-point lead at the top of Group G in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifiers.

Gray put the Three Lions ahead on the hour mark, hitting the ball into the roof of the net. The floodgates were opened at Carrow Road, and later Ethan Nwaneri and Romain Esse extended England.
Before the game, Lee Carsley spoke about the pressures of playing for a team embroiled in a relegation battle. Speaking to Hayters, the England under-21 boss said: “He’s getting more minutes at Tottenham under a lot of pressure and high-pressure situations.”
Carsley added: “It’s very difficult. I’ve had the experience of being kicked out of the Premier League for two years on the bounce. It’s not easy. You live and breathe it literally every minute of the day.
“And to be at a club like Tottenham, where the pressure will be very high with the new stadium and the training ground and the expectations, Archie has thrived in that environment and hopefully he can continue.”
Meanwhile, Bergvall came off the bench to play a key role in Sweden’s World Cup qualification. In the last minutes of the European game against Poland, the 20-year-old player was saved by Kamil Grabara, which fell to Besfort Zeneli, who hit the post.

The ball then went back to Viktor Gyokeres, who slotted home the winner from close range. Thanks to Bergvall, Graham Potter’s team secured a place in Group F at the World Cup, joined by Japan, the Netherlands and Tunisia.
In an interview with Fotbollskanalen after the match, Bergvall gave an update on his training. The Swede has only recently returned to action, having needed surgery on an ankle injury at the start of the year.
“It was tough, but it was great to come back and win,” Bergvall said. “Yeah, it went fast. But it’s hard to tell when you get an accident like that. It varies from person to person how fast it goes. I was lucky to get back in time.”
Gray and Bergvall could feature in midfield when Tottenham face Sunderland next week. To talk to football.london back in November 2025, the former spoke about his relationship with the latter.
“Lucas and I are very close,” Gray said. “Every time we’re on the field together, we just trust each other 100 percent. Even if there’s pressure on us, we know we can play together and we can handle that pressure. We’re very close on the field and off the field as well.”
