Dejan Kulusevski cried for hours before meeting Roberto De Zerbi

The Spurs star was emotional just hours after the club appointed new manager Roberto De Zerbi

Spurs star Dejan Kulusevski broke down in tears on Tuesday night as he watched Sweden beat Poland 3-2 in their opening game in Stockholm to book their ticket to this summer’s World Cup.

The midfielder’s emotional display came on the same day his club appointed Roberto De Zerbi to the managerial hot seat. Kulusevski’s Swedish team-mate Yasin Ayari was asked by reporters about the 25-year-old “crying in the stands” after the match.

The Tottenham player’s reaction may be the most emotional after a torturous season so far that has seen him sidelined through injury. Ayari said: “As I said before, I know what it means to him. Now we are here, we have done it for him, for the Swedish people and for us.

“So I’m happy for him. I think we can win the whole World Cup. We have a good team and we believe in ourselves. We always believed in ourselves.”

Kulusevski traveled to Valencia to support Sweden in their semi-final against Ukraine last Thursday before cheering on his fellow countrymen. The Spurs star has said he is determined to force his way back into action in time for the World Cup, despite not kicking a ball this season after undergoing patellar surgery last May.

Speaking to Viaplay, Kulusevski said: “I haven’t played a year. I know what the chances are. But if there is one person in the world who can do this, I would bet on myself. And we don’t just go there to participate.

“Sweden will aim to be one of the best. As long as I live, I will do everything I can so that Sweden, when we go out and play, is not afraid of anyone. Brazil, France, whoever. That is why I am in this world. To give faith and love to my people.”

Three weeks ago, Kulusevski underwent minor surgery to clean up his knee. Speaking about his latest surgery, he played down fears, adding: “I understand people were worried, but it was really for the wrong reason.

“It was really good to have this little operation and to know the problem. Now everything has to be fixed. Maybe because of things that cannot be known because, at the end of the day, only God decides and no one else.”

Kulusevski will also turn his attention to his new manager at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. De Zerbi, 46, signed a good five-year contract on Tuesday.

He replaces Igor Tudor, who was sacked on Sunday after a 44-day spell in north London. De Zerbi has seven games to maintain Tottenham’s top-flight status.

Speaking after his appointment, the Italian said: “I am happy to be a member of this great football club, one of the biggest and most famous in the world.

“In all my discussions with the team’s leadership, their ambition for the future is clear – to build a team capable of achieving great success, and to do so playing the kind of football that excites and inspires our supporters. I am here because I believe in that ambition and have signed a long-term contract to give it my all.”
