Monte-Carlo Masters: Daniil Medvedev shock 6-0 6-0 defeat in 49 minutes to Matteo Berrettini

Daniil Medvedev suffered a stunning 6-0 6-0 defeat in 49 minutes to Matteo Berrettini at the Monte-Carlo Masters on Wednesday.

Medvedev won just 17 points as former Wimbledon player Berrettini became the first ATP player to win a match without losing a single match against a top 10 player in 10 years.

Berrettini’s wild card was brutally effective against the inactive Medvedev, who did not have a single point in the match.

It is the first time Medvedev has lost a tour-level match without winning a match and he has now lost 10 sets 6-0 in his career.

After falling 6-0 2-0 down, Medvedev lost his cool and let out his frustration on his racket, threw it to the back of the court, picked it up, smashed it into the ground before putting it in the bin.

The former world No 1 ended the match with 28 unforced errors.

Jamie Murray, speaking to Sky Sports Tennis:

“It’s amazing and it shouldn’t happen but it happened,” said Murray, the two-time Grand Slam champion. “I don’t know how much of an effect that will have on him going forward, but I’m sure he’ll be very embarrassed when he goes back to the dressing room, and I’ll be looking to get out early, I think, if it’s the performance I put in today.

“Medvedev played very well in Indian Wells [reaching the final]. He talks about how it is not his favorite place and the problems he has in it.

“He won it in Rome, so if you win in Rome, you can play on clay so it was amazing to see him drop a few eggs there.

“Well done to Berrettini for doing that because it’s not an easy thing to do.”

‘The game plan was perfect’

“I think it was one of the best performances of my life,” former world No 6 Berrettini said. “I think I missed three shots in the whole game and it’s not easy against a tricky player like Daniil. I think the game plan was perfect and my weapons were working.

“I faced two break points in the first game and after that, I felt that I was playing better than him. I didn’t expect to win zero, zero like that. But I focused because I know that one or two breaks are not enough sometimes, so I kept pushing.”

The last player to go 6-0 6-0 against a top 10 player was when David Goffin beat Tomas Berdych at the Rome Masters in 2016.

It is only the fifth time in the Open Era that an ATP player has gone 6-0 6-0 against a top 10 player.

“I’ve been playing for a long time, so I felt it was important to hold my serve at the beginning of the second set,” Berrettini added.

“It’s a matter of a few points at the start, and when you go up with two breaks, you’re relaxed, and the ball is gone. [flying] outside of your racquet.”
