A Huddersfield pub wants better road safety after customers were injured

The Four Horseshoes said a number of people were injured on Saturday night

A Huddersfield pub owner has spoken of the horrific moment several people were injured outside his boozer.

The Four Horseshoes in Market Street, Milnsbridge, was at the center of the horrific incident in which several people were injured by the vehicles. The incident is understood to have happened at around 10pm on Saturday 4 April.

“It’s been 10 years since I’ve had this site, I’ve seen and supported road users after car collisions but nothing so far,” said the road owner. “The accident happened at ten o’clock last night (Saturday, April 4), pedestrians and other road users were still very much there at that time.”

The owner said that three cars were “racing” in the city before the incident happened. He said they were running “from the traffic lights to Manchester Road apparently.”

The type of vehicle has not yet been identified. West Yorkshire Police have contacted them for more information.

A picture posted on the pub’s Facebook page shows extensive damage to what is believed to be a smoking area outside the pub. It is not yet known how the damage was caused, nor how many people were injured.

The owner of the house also talked about rumors that one of the injured people was killed during the incident. He said: “I have seen the impression that a death has occurred, which is absolutely not the case to be clear.”

Posting to The Four Horseshoes’ Facebook page on Sunday afternoon (April 5), Danny thanked the emergency services and pub staff for their actions. He said: “Following the unfortunate events of last night, we would like to take a moment to offer our heartfelt thanks to the amazing emergency services who responded so quickly and professionally.

“Nobody ever visits their pub expecting an incident like this, and we want to reassure our community that what happened was out of the pub’s control. The investigation is now ongoing, and we are fully co-operating with the police and supporting their inquiries as much as possible – what I would like to share is that the roads in Milnsbridge are 30mph for a reason!”

“I would also like to extend my sincere gratitude to the staff of The Four Horseshoes for their swift action to safeguard the situation and provide care and support to those affected, as well as to the customers who stepped in to help each other during this difficult time.

“A final note to wish those injured in last night’s events a speedy recovery.“Thank you to our community for your understanding and support.”Danny added that the park is open as usual, although the smoking shelter is now gone. He wrote: “Today we are open as usual for food including bank holiday Monday from 9am to 4pm and karaoke for everyone to follow.

“The smoking area will be closed until further notice.”

The pub owner is now calling for better traffic calming measures, saying the incident was an “accident waiting to happen”. He told YorkshireLive: “I would recommend a review of the road and the introduction of traffic calming measures similar to villages like Slaithwaite,” he said. “Just today when I was out surveying the damage, a road user decided to overtake a speeder. The town of Milnsbridge and the community deserve better traffic calming measures…

“It’s a daycare center just a few meters from the mall.”
