But who will book a place in the second round?
ATP Monte Carlo Day 2 Predictions
Andrey Rublev vs. Nuno Borges
Headlines: Rublev 3-0 Borges
Andrey Rublev has been better in this tournament, winning their last three matches without losing a set. That includes earlier this year in Hong Kong. Nuno Borges may be more competitive on his favorite clay and has been playing solid tennis this season, but this still looks like a tall order for the Portuguese.
Rublev is better equipped than Borges and the Russian also has a good record at the ATP Monte Carlo Masters, winning the title in 2023 and reaching the final in 2021. This should be a comfortable day at the office for the 13th seeds in a match-up that he clearly enjoyed.
Prediction: Rublev at 2
Zizou Bergs vs Adrian Mannarino
Headlines: Mannarino 1-0 Bergs
Adrian Mannarino won the group’s previous clash 18 months ago in Bercy, coming back from the bench to win 3-6 6-2 6-4 in the 32nd round. But Zizou Bergs has improved in the interim and is perhaps the narrow favorite coming into this match in conditions that should suit his strong fundamentals.
That’s not to say he’ll have it all his own way, and the veteran Frenchman is still a master at disrupting his opponent’s rhythm and still (slightly) a top man despite being 38 years old.th the birthday is now just months away. But if Bergs can play to the best of his abilities, and is inspired by his doubles partner Jannik Sinner, the Belgian should have almost a chance to go on.
Prediction: Bergs at 3
Cristian Garin vs Matteo Arnaldi
Headlines: Arnaldi 1-0 Garin
This is due to the interesting conflict of clay courts regardless of whether there was no one in very good shape. Indeed, Cristian Garin – who was once knocking on the door of the top 15 – has endured a difficult stretch and finds himself on the verge of falling out of the top 100 again. But he got two wins under his belt in qualifying, beating Jesper de Jong and Nikoloz Basilashvili to reach the main draw.
Matteo Arnaldi’s qualifying campaign did not go well, with the Italian losing narrowly to Alexandre Muller in the second and final round, before being given a break as a lucky loser. He is a good enough player to take advantage of his luck, but if Garin can maintain the pace he showed in qualifying, the experienced Mochile should have a chance. However, don’t be surprised if this one goes far.
Prediction: Garin in 3
Flavio Cobolli vs Francisco Comesana
Headlines: the first meeting
There is no doubt that Flavio Cobolli will aim to make an impact in the coming weeks with his favorite clay, but the 10th The seed this week starts his ATP Monte Carlo Masters with a tough job. Francisco Comesana may not be a regular player at the top level, but the Argentinian – like many of his countrymen – is an excellent clay player and looked more than good in qualifying.
Cobolli, meanwhile, had a disappointing Sunshine Double, winning just one match at Indian Wells, but winning the title in Acapulco once before heading to the USA. If he regains that position, he should be beaten by Comesana here. But he may have to work for his victory.
Prediction: Cobolli in 3
