Super League: Huddersfield Giants beat York Knights for a second straight win as the Catalans won a thrilling derby with Toulouse.

Jacob Gagai scored two second-half tries as Huddersfield sealed their Super League title by beating York 34-14 at the Accu Stadium.

The Australian, playing at center against the Knights, scored twice before the second half after three tries in the opening 14 minutes from team-mates Adam Clune, Niall Evalds and Tanguy Zenon gave the Giants a flying start.

After falling 18-0 behind, York responded with tries from Will Roberts and David Nofoaluma early on, but Gagai’s brace put Huddersfield back in full control.

Nikau Williams went for the converted score for the visitors just after the hour mark to cut the deficit to 28-14 with 12 minutes remaining.

However, Huddersfield scored their sixth try of the game through Australian Zac Woolford’s hook two minutes later to seal victory for the beaten Giants.

France full-back Tanguy Zenon scored three conversions for Huddersfield and full-back Oliver Russell chipped in with two more, while Knights’ Roberts scored one of his three tries.

The Giants, who have lost their first five Super League games this season, are being led by director of rugby Andy Kelly after sacking head coach Luke Robinson last month.

They ended their losing streak last week with a shock win at Wigan and moved up to 11th in the table, with York sitting in second place after a fourth successive defeat.

The Catalans win the thrill of Toulouse

The Catalans Dragons scored an emphatic 33-26 derby win against Toulouse at the Stade Gilbert Brutus.

Toulouse missed the first three tries before the hosts opened the scoring on 13 minutes when Toby Sexton crossed, with further tries from Leo Darrelatour and Nick Cotric extending the lead to 16-0.

Toulouse slowly built up their composure and registered a try in the 27th minute through Mathieu Jussaume before a clever kick from Cesar Rouge found Oliver Ashall-Bott to tap under the posts.

The visitors trailed at 16-16 before the break when Jussaume took a short break to break through the Catalans defence.

The Catalans again showed themselves to start the second half strongly as Darrelatour crossed for his second try and Solomone Faataape added another to open a 10-point lead.

Toulouse responded again when Jussaume headed in from another quick exchange for his hat-trick after 65 minutes.

The Catalans got more breathing room when Phoenix Laulu-Togaga’e crossed with 10 minutes remaining and Sexton added more before Leeming sealed the late goal.

Luke Polselli made a consolation run down Toulouse’s right before the whistle.
