OPPOSITION

Director: Haseeb Hameed

Head coach: Peter Moores

2025 at the end: of 1

2025 leading rusherHaseb Hameed (1,258)

2025 leading wicket taker: Brett Hutton (38)

Winter essentials: The loss of Pakistani seamer Mohammad Abbas in Derbyshire was an unexpected tragedy. In his place, Mohammad Ali, another experienced Pakistan quick, is set to play in Rothesay County’s last six Championship games; Australian skipper Fergus O’Neill, who has taken 21 wickets in four matches at the start of 2025, could play in the first eight. South Africa’s impressive wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne returns and England’s Ben Duckett’s early presence after canceling his IPL contract is a real boost.

What can we expect?: Battle to be the No 1 spinner of the district. After his stunning end to the 2024 season, youngster Farhan Ahmed was in top form last April before Liam Patterson-White, a left-armer whose career was a bit off, was recalled and ruled out. Leg-spinner Calvin Harrison has moved to Northamptonshire but fellow left-armer Joe Pocklington, who impressed in the Metro Bank One Day Cup, adds to the competition.

It aims to catch the eyes of Test candidates: Haseeb Hameed has had a fragmented international career so far, but after 2,349 first-team runs at 58.72 over the past two seasons, including seven centuries, three of them doubles, two with his bat, he really deserves another look. A very good player at the end of the selection, he stays healthy but gives points at a very fast rate.

A final thought: After two seasons closer to the bottom of the Division One table than the top, Surrey’s drubbing of Nottinghamshire still seems like a fantastic idea until it happens, thanks to Josh Tongue leading an impressive win at Kia Oval in the first leg. Tongue may not be around much this season and it could be a good moment for Dillon Pennington to realize his full potential. Defending their title will not be easy, but confidence is high.

GROUP AFFAIRS

Somerset will be without Tom Banton (IPL), but Migael Pretorius returns to the team.

The starting XI will be selected from the following team: Lewis Gregory, Tom Kohler Cadmore, Josh Thomas, Tom Lammonby, James Rew, Tom Abell, Lewis Goldsworthy, Craig Overton, Archie Vaughan, Migael Pretorius, Jack Leach, Alfie Ogborne, Jake Ball and Josh Shaw.

SERVICE FROM THE CLOTHING DEPARTMENT

Before the game, Somerset Head Coach, Jason Kerr said: “You spend a lot of time in the winter trying to improve and learn from last year. Friday is the start of the opportunity to try and implement, so there is a lot of excitement in the dressing room. It is great to start at home and we are playing against last year’s champions; there is no other way to start the year.

“Even though our pre-season plans fell apart, we’ve trained brilliantly, so we’re as prepared as we’ll ever be. There’s an air of hope and anticipation, and the nerves will be there on the first day because everyone wants to start the season well, as a team and individually.

Every team wants to start the season well and everyone wants to fly. So, those are the messages we will send in the dressing room. The truth is that it is a very long time. He has 14 games and needs to be in contention in September. So, it is clear that how we start is important, but what will be even more important is how we finish.

THE ADDRESS IS THE SAME

We go back to 1992 for the first ever First Division game between the two Taunton sides.

It was a match that saw Somerset claim a complete victory thanks to three centurions in Somerset’s first innings.

Somerset captain Chris Tavaré won the game and chose to go on the field.

Graeme Archer (83 not out) and Tim Robinson (74) ensured the visitors reached a total of 265, while there were three wickets apiece for Andy Caddick and Harvey Trump.

In reply, Somerset posted a mammoth total of 616 for seven all out.

Richard Harden top scored with 187 points, while there were centuries for Tavaré (125) and Rob Turner (101*).

Batting a second time, Notts were bowled out for 188, Trump taking another four wickets, as Somerset claimed victory by an innings and 163 runs.
