Chelsea hit Enzo Fernandez as new details emerge

Chelsea face a double blow if Enzo Fernandez leaves the club amid uncertainty surrounding the Argentina international’s future at Stamford Bridge.

The situation involving Enzo Fernandez it does not improve Chelsea. The midfielder has raised doubts over his long-term future at Stamford Bridge afterwards admitted that he does not know where he will play next season.

Speculation linking the 25-year-old to Real Madrid has been swirling for over a year and Fernandez has done little to dispel the rumours. In fact, he has openly expressed an interest in living in the Spanish capital – statements that may increase attention to his future.

Despite growing doubts, Chelsea still hold a lot of cards. Fernandez is still under contract for another six years, and after paying a record £107million to bring him from Benfica in 2023, the club would want a similar fee ahead of talks.

That said, any potential transfer would cause a double whammy for Chelsea. Not only could they lose one of their top players but there are also financial concerns because River Plate must be five percent of any future transfer fee, based on the deal agreed when they sold Fernandez to Benfica in 2022, according to reports from his country.

The Argentinian club – where Fernandez began his professional journey – have benefited greatly from his development, earning £26.75m with a 25 per cent share of sales following his transfer to Chelsea.

The uncertainty surrounding Fernandez began to grow after Chelsea lost the second leg 3-0 to PSG in the Champions League earlier this month – part of a poor run that saw Liam Rosenior’s side suffer four defeats during the international break.

Speaking to ESPN after the game, the 2022 World Cup winner said: “I don’t know what the future holds. Now I’m focused on this; there are eight games left and the FA Cup. Then there’s the World Cup, and after that we’ll see.”

After just a week, he strengthened the theory further, saying: “I would like to live in Madrid. It is a beautiful city, it reminds me of Buenos Aires.”

Losing Fernandez would be a huge blow to Chelsea. Not only is he the vice-captain and an influential figure in the dressing room but he has also been a key source of goals this season, scoring 12 goals in all competitions and establishing himself as one of the team’s most reliable players.

His exit would raise tough questions about the club’s long-term vision under BlueCo. So far, Chelsea have been very successful in bringing in top young talent without being forced into unwanted departures. Letting Fernandez go, however, could signal a change in direction — and could increase interest in other key players like Cole Palmer and Moises Caicedo.

Fernandez is not the only player showing signs of dissatisfaction. This week, Marc Cucurella publicly criticized Chelsea’s recruitment strategy, citing inexperience as the main reason for their Champions League collapse against PSG.

“We have a good base of players. The foundations are there. But to fight for big prizes like the Premier League or the Champions League, you need more,” the Spanish defender told The Athletic. “Signing young players can make it harder to achieve those goals.

“Against PSG, we lacked players who have gone through such situations… You need time, I know the young players are the ones who will have experience in the future. But you need to find a balance between both worlds.”

Cucurella also spoke about the impact of Enzo Maresca’s unexpected exit in January. “When Enzo Maresca left, it had a big impact on us,” Cucurella said. “If you ask me, I would not have made this decision. To make such a change, the best thing is to wait until the end of the season.”

Fernandez made similar comments last week. “I don’t understand why that is [Maresca getting sacked] it happened,” he said. “As players, there are things we don’t understand, and the way they try to deal with situations.

“I don’t have an answer for this. I don’t know… It was a departure that hurt me a lot. We had information and Maresca gave us shape. Sometimes in football there are good or bad results, but Maresca always had clear information. We were all hurt by his departure, especially in the middle of the season… It just cut it completely.”

Malo Gusto shared these concerns while on international duty with France, pointing to the great confusion within the team. “Enzo Maresca was fired… it was a big change for the team. Everyone was surprised,” the defender said. “It was a bit difficult for us in the middle of the season.”
